The Technology is Rooted in Science
When Dean Kamen first showcased the Segway PT on the American TV channel «ABC» in the program «Good Morning America,» he introduced it as «the world’s first self-balancing human transporter.» When you see the machine in motion, you’ll understand what he meant. Unlike a car, the Segway has only two wheels, yet it manages to stay upright on its own.
To move forward or backward, the user simply leans slightly forward or backward. To turn left or right, the user turns the «LeanSteer» steering column left or right.

How Dynamic Stabilization Works |
If you lean forward significantly while standing, you’re unlikely to fall face-first. Your brain senses the loss of balance because the fluid in your inner ear shifts. Your brain commands you to step forward to prevent the fall. If you keep leaning forward, your brain directs your legs to keep moving forward to maintain your upright position. Instead of falling, you walk forward step by step.
The Segway does the same, except it has wheels instead of legs, a motor instead of muscles, a set of microprocessors instead of a brain, and a set of gyroscopic sensors and tilt sensors instead of an inner ear. Just like your brain, the Segway knows when you lean forward. To keep you balanced, it rotates the wheels at the speed needed to move forward. Segway Inc. calls this ability dynamic stabilization and has patented this unique process that allows the Segway to balance on just two wheels.

Brains and Brawn The Segway PT is controlled by an intelligent system of sensors, mechanical components, a drive system, and control systems. The moment you step onto the Segway’s platform, five miniature gyroscopic sensors and two accelerometers detect changes in terrain and your body’s position 100 times per second – faster than the human brain can process. |
The Segway uses specialized solid-state angular rate sensors made with silicon. This type of gyroscopic sensor detects rotation using the Coriolis effect on a very small scale.
Simply put, the Coriolis effect causes an apparent change in the path of one moving object relative to another rotating object. For example, an airplane flying in a straight trajectory appears to follow a curved path due to the Earth’s rotation beneath it.
The Segway uses five gyroscopic sensors, although only three are needed for operation: to detect your body’s lean forward or backward (called “pitch”), left or right (“roll”), and to determine turning left or right (“yaw”). The additional sensors serve as backups, ensuring greater machine reliability. All this information about your body’s position and steering, along with data from tilt sensors, feeds into the device’s brain.

The Segway carries several additional microprocessors. The machine requires such computational power because it must make precise adjustments and corrections quickly to stay balanced. If one control board (or its associated battery, motor winding, or wiring) fails, the other set takes over all functions, giving the system enough time to notify the user of the issue and come to a smooth stop.

Microprocessors run complex software that controls the Segway. This software monitors all balance-related data from the gyroscopic sensors and adjusts the motor speed in response. The electric motors, powered by a pair of lithium-ion batteries, can rotate each wheel independently at variable speeds. |
When the Segway leans forward, the motors rotate both wheels forward to prevent it from tipping over. When it leans backward, the motors rotate both wheels in reverse. When the user turns the «LeanSteer» steering column left or right, the motors spin one wheel faster than the other, or at low speeds, rotate the wheels in opposite directions to turn the Segway. During motion, the Segway precisely executes the required turning radius, balancing your lean with the centripetal acceleration generated by the turn.
