Description

It’s difficult to explain the nuances of limited and limitless in one sentence. But with only 700 units available worldwide, the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R is as exclusive as it is offroad-capable. Featuring WP Pro Components suspension on par with the factory KTM 450, a unique color scheme, and numerous race-inspired details, the only thing limiting the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R is the number of units produced.

ENGINE

The most noticeable upgrade compared to its predecessor is the engine. Delivering impressive power, the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R engine boasts numerous enhancements, primarily a significant boost in power and torque. Upgrades to the electronics and exhaust system also ensure compliance with the strictest emissions standards. Combined with a 15,000 km service interval and low fuel consumption, it’s ready for long-distance adventures.

CYLINDER HEAD

The DOHC cylinder head houses twin chain-driven camshafts and two spark plugs (one per cylinder). The camshafts are assembled, making them lighter than forged camshafts, and the cam profile was designed to create a particularly torque-rich engine. The intake and exhaust valves are 1 mm larger, and redesigned ports optimized for maximum airflow also contribute to peak performance. A new balancer shaft in the cylinder head, positioned between the camshafts, accommodates higher RPMs and increased rotating mass, while a knock sensor detects detonation and accounts for lower-octane fuel—ideal for global travel.

PISTONS

Lighter forged box pistons with three piston rings, connected by a plain conrod bearing, paired with a DLC-coated piston pin, reduce piston weight and reciprocating mass. Piston cooling is achieved with two jets per piston instead of the previous single jet. The crankshaft’s rotating mass is increased by 20% to improve engine behavior at constant RPM, contributing to cornering stability without sacrificing agility.

RIDE-BY-WIRE THROTTLE

Instead of controlling the throttle valve in the electronic fuel injection system with a conventional throttle cable, the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R uses an electronic ride-by-wire system. Electronic sensors translate the throttle grip’s movement to actuate the throttle valve via a servo motor. Not only is this instantaneous and efficient, but the ride management system enables much more. It electronically translates the rider’s throttle commands into the optimal throttle valve position for the current riding situation and ensures linear power delivery. Ride-by-wire offers greater freedom in tailoring engine feel, and features like MTC and Quickshifter+ would be impossible without it.

BALANCER SHAFT

When enduring long days in the saddle, linking challenging offroad sections with asphalt stretches, engine vibrations are minimized thanks to two new balancer shafts—one in front of the crankshaft and the other in the cylinder head between the two camshafts.

CYLINDERS

Nikasil-coated aluminum cylinders are an integral part of the sleeveless engine casing. The open-deck cylinder design ensures optimal cooling, improved manufacturing tolerances, and reduces the likelihood of cylinder warping during production. The cylinder bore is increased from 88 mm to 90.7 mm to boost displacement and stroke.

CONNECTING RODS

Brand-new connecting rods feature a trapezoidal V-shaped upper end, reducing oscillating masses and supporting higher torque and engine output. The upper bearing is now a bronze conrod bearing instead of a DLC-coated upper end for increased durability.

CRANKSHAFT

A 20% increase in rotating mass means this forged one-piece crankshaft improves engine behavior at constant RPM, reducing the impact of centrifugal forces. The 435-degree firing order also produces a sound reminiscent of the larger LC8 V-twin engine, making the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R feel like one of its V-twin ADVENTURE siblings when opening the throttle.

CRANKCASE

New horizontally split crankcases allow for the increased cylinder bore but remain high-pressure die-cast aluminum. This enables thinner walls, reduced weight, and optimized surfaces, giving engine designers more freedom. The open-deck cylinders are integrated into the engine crankcase.

LUBRICATION SYSTEM

Oil circulation relies on a compact semi-dry sump system to minimize friction losses. Oil is actively pumped from the crankcase, clutch housing, and gearbox, preventing unnecessary oil flow through the engine. The oil sump is integrated into the oil pump housing, along with two pumps (one scavenge, one pressure) and a pressure regulation valve. A larger oil cooler is fitted to cool the engine oil.

SLIPPER CLUTCH

The Power Assist Clutch (PASC), equipped with new friction plates and improved cooling, serves a dual purpose on the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R. It acts as a slipper clutch, preventing rear wheel chatter during hard deceleration, and reduces the effort required for gear shifts, allowing the clutch lever to be operated with just one finger, saving energy during rides.

GEARBOX

The 6-speed sequential gearbox offers faster shifting thanks to a shorter shift lever travel, lighter spring action, and quicker Quickshifter+ technology, while the teeth on 4th, 5th, and 6th gears are glass-bead blasted for enhanced reliability. Quickshifter+ enables clutchless upshifts and downshifts across the entire RPM range.

EXHAUST SYSTEM

The KTM 890 ADVENTURE R wouldn’t be complete without a lightweight titanium AKRAPOVIC Slip-on Line muffler. This enhances the READY TO RACE spirit and reinforces its deep rally roots. Using high-grade titanium reduces weight by approximately 30-40% compared to a standard muffler, with the added benefit of improved sound.

AIR FILTER

The KTM 890 ADVENTURE R provides easy access to the air filter for cleaning and maintenance, even in the most remote locations during a ride. The airbox is located under the seat, with the air intake at the rear of the bike. This allows for easy filter access, keeps the seat and tank low, and makes the bike narrower where it matters: at the legs. It also optimizes electronics placement for better mass centralization.

COOLING

During extreme offroad adventures, keeping the LC8c engine cool is crucial to maintaining its enhanced power and performance. Thanks to the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R’s design and advanced cooling technology, hours of riding in hot conditions are no issue.

FRAME

The overall geometry of the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R was designed for lightweight handling and comfort on long-distance exploration missions—with unmatched offroad capability. Strength was a key focus during design, so a chromoly steel tubular frame uses the engine as a stressed member to reduce weight and dimensions. All design and engineering innovations aim for compactness and lightness.

SUBFRAME

Even lighter and stronger than its predecessor, the subframe is fully equipped for adventure. The bike beneath you needs to be durable. The steel trellis subframe was designed to be compact, lightweight, and strong enough to carry a full load of luggage and a passenger under the toughest conditions during extreme adventure riding.

SWINGARM

The signature die-cast open-lattice swingarm is precision-manufactured and optimized for stiffness and stability while offering excellent flex characteristics. Using a direct link for the rear shock reduces complexity and parts. The relatively long swingarm improves traction, stability, and suspension setup.

WHEELS AND TIRES

The KTM 890 ADVENTURE R boasts high-strength DID DirtStar rims (21 x 2.15 inches and 18 x 4.00 inches), designed specifically for offroad travel. With years of experience and success in the toughest offroad and rally-raid conditions, you can venture into the most remote wilderness with confidence. For those seeking an even more extreme ride, slightly narrower enduro wheels are available in the KTM PowerParts catalog. Lightweight and durable Metzeler KAROO 3 adventure tires with inner tubes are fitted as standard. Due to the use of tubes, an additional TPMS cannot be installed.

SUSPENSION

The KTM 890 ADVENTURE R handles anything you throw at it with lightweight WP XPLOR PRO 7548 forks featuring cone valve technology. This unique valve system provides near-limitless damping performance, combining superior comfort with excellent bottoming resistance. External adjustments allow riders to easily tweak settings typically achievable only by altering internal shims. The cone valve enables unlimited opening, reducing suspension harshness, while the closed cartridge design lowers friction, ensures consistent performance over time, and improves response.

STEERING DAMPER

A steering damper is fitted for enhanced stability.

TRIPLE CLAMPS

Forged high-strength aluminum triple clamps ensure excellent stability while offering enough flex for chassis feedback. An updated aluminum steering stem reduces weight and increases overall strength.

REAR SHOCK

The exceptional WP XPLOR PRO 6746 shock for the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R was developed using expertise from years of successful rally racing. Featuring the latest low-friction components, the shock delivers the highest damping performance, reducing physical strain on riders. It uses a Progressive Damping System (PDS) and is fully adjustable for high- and low-speed compression damping, rebound damping, and spring preload.

BRAKES

Upgraded for 2021, the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R features two 320 mm brake discs with 4-piston radially mounted calipers at the front and a 260 mm disc with a 2-piston floating caliper at the rear, delivering excellent feedback and stopping power. A new stainless steel rear brake hose helps combat brake fade on long descents. The rear brake includes new isolated pistons in the caliper, paired with isolation plates between pads and pistons for improved heat resistance. Additionally, the rear caliper’s brake hose fitting is made of stainless steel to reduce brake hose heating.

FUEL TANK

This revolutionary fuel tank design is central to the 890 ADVENTURE R’s handling and ergonomics. By placing the main tank volume as low as possible, extending down the sides of the chassis, it offers multiple benefits. Whether sitting or standing, the tank feels significantly narrower and more compact than expected for its 20-liter capacity. A low fuel volume ensures easy handling, with the main weight positioned low and forward, eliminating fuel slosh and balance shifts typical of traditionally placed tanks. This results in a low center of gravity, enhancing agility and enabling playful handling and instant direction changes. The freed-up traditional tank area allows for a straighter, lower seat, giving the rider more freedom of movement. The tank is made of high-strength materials with excellent impact resistance, proven by a similar tank concept successfully used by the KTM Factory Racing team in the extreme conditions of the Dakar Rally. The result is the best of both worlds: the slim feel of a smaller offroad bike with an exceptional range of over 400 km on the open road.

HANDLEBAR

The aluminum tapered handlebar provides maximum control while ensuring a comfortable riding position. The handlebar can be adjusted to six different positions, offering a 30 mm range for ideal reach.

FOOTPEGS

The footpegs on the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R feature a wider contact area, providing better grip and comfort when standing, adding to the rugged, Dakar-ready feel.

SEAT

The tall, race-inspired straight seat is a clear statement of this bike’s rally intentions. The one-piece seat enhances offroad riding ergonomics, making transitions between sitting and standing easier and improving overall offroad maneuverability. Seats in the KTM 890 ADVENTURE lineup are interchangeable and can be fitted to reduce ground clearance, increase comfort, or suit personal preference.

WINDSHIELD

The KTM 890 ADVENTURE R features a low-profile adjustable windshield, allowing the rider to move more freely on the bike when in the necessary offroad position. This sleek windshield ensures an unobstructed view ahead, even when covered in mud. The taller windshield from the KTM 890 ADVENTURE can be used on the R model as an optional extra for riders preferring greater wind protection.

BODYWORK AND GRAPHICS

Designed for the harshest conditions, the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R’s bodywork is intentionally minimal. Durable plastic, molded in a unique color, retains its appearance even when scratched. Fuel tank spoilers and rear side panels are slightly wider than the seat, improving control and reducing seat wear. The LED headlight mask borrows design elements from KTM FACTORY machines, creating a slim, lightweight front end with improved ground visibility. With its unique color and in-mold graphics reflecting KTM Factory Racing’s efforts, the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R is unmistakable on or off the road.

TFT DISPLAY

The 5-inch full-color, state-of-the-art TFT display is designed to clearly present all vital information, allowing riders to spend more time with their eyes on the road. The display configuration is customizable and automatically adapts to changes in ambient lighting. A shift indicator flashes the RPM gauge when it’s time to upshift.

LED LIGHTING

LED lights are used on the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R for the main headlight and rear light. LED lights provide excellent illumination and visibility. The headlight mask design draws inspiration from KTM 450 bikes, improving visibility and reducing cockpit bulk during offroad riding.

RIDER AIDS

Electronic rider aids provide greater control, performance, and enjoyment across a wider range of conditions. Designed to enhance your riding experience, the latest ABS and MTC (Motorcycle Traction Control) technologies, along with various ride modes, are tailored to easily adjust rider aids for different terrains. These features can be selected, deselected, and utilized to maximize technology and equipment across a broader range of conditions.

MTC

KTM’s Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) was improved in 2021 with two separate controllers to measure rear wheel slip and lean angle, calculating optimal traction for each terrain and situation. The result is smoother traction control with less abrupt and barely noticeable intervention at the throttle body. For adventure enthusiasts, traction control can be fully disabled.

CORNERING ABS

KTM’s cornering ABS allows riders to use full braking power while the system adjusts brake pressure based on the motorcycle’s lean angle. This ensures safer, more predictable braking across a wider range of conditions and scenarios. It can also be disabled for greater control in offroad conditions.

OFFROAD ABS

Maximum braking power with minimal intervention. Offroad braking demands differ greatly from predictable asphalt grip. When Offroad ABS is selected, ABS is deactivated on the rear wheel, while front wheel ABS intervention is reduced, and lean angle sensor data is ignored to support the intuitive riding style needed for speed control on dirt. This allows riders to lock the rear wheel for better cornering control and regulates front brake pressure for balanced, confident braking on the toughest terrain.

RIDE MODES

Offroad Ride Mode reduces power on challenging terrain using sophisticated sensors that adapt power delivery via the ECU for effective and confident offroad use. Peak power is reduced, throttle response is softened, and wheel slip is increased for dynamic riding on loose surfaces. Some wheel slip is necessary for forward motion on low-grip surfaces. This feature allows riders to significantly reduce traction and improve rear wheel control. Anti-Wheelie is disabled in this mode, enabling riders to lift the front wheel to clear obstacles. Unlike some other modes, Offroad Ride Mode is not lean-angle sensitive, meaning traction control doesn’t interfere when riders use berms, dunes, or ruts to navigate tight corners.

RALLY MODE

Rally Mode comes standard on the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R, allowing riders to freely adapt the bike’s character. It provides near-instantaneous throttle response and offers 9 levels of wheel slip control, with level 9 comparable to Rain Mode. These settings allow slip adjustment to be precisely tailored to surface conditions, rider skill, and riding demands. Reducing slip levels can also help preserve tires during extended rides.

KTM MY RIDE

Stepping into the world of seamless connectivity, KTM MY RIDE links your smartphone to the motorcycle. It enables call handling, playlist navigation, and access to navigation directly on the TFT display. More details can be found on the website.
